Ironside
Associates LP (formerly Reservoir Land Company of Oregon,
Inc)
Ironside
Associates LP owns ranching and timber operations in Ironside,
Oregon and leases ranching properties in the California foothills.
The cattle operations are built around genetic traits that can
thrive on open range conditions while yielding high calving rates as
well as eventually producing high grade carcasses. The majority of
the Ironside cattle are Black Angus or Black Baldies (Hereford-Angus
crosses). By selecting Bulls and A1 semen with genetic traits that
produce smaller birthing weights balanced with high yielding
finished cattle that have large rib eyes for the top grades,
Ironside Associates has garnered a reputation for a premium
product.
The production
begins with the calving cycle in March and April. For the next four
to six months, the cows and calves, which are divided into four
manageable herds, graze on 65,000 deeded and 10,000 BLM leased acres
of meadows, range land and forests. In the fall, calves are
weaned, cows checked for pregnancy for the subsequent season and
replacement heifers are integrated into the herds. Following the
first rains in the California hills, the calves are shipped to
winter pastures in LeGrand, California, alongside the Mariposa
river, west of Yosemite National Park. On the rich winter grasses
the Ironside calves gain approximately three pounds a day. They
will remain there until late spring at which time the heifers
are sorted, with the top animals being retained for replacement
heifers to return to Oregon. The balance of the heifers and the
steers are either marketed as feeder cattle or retained for further
grassland grazing and/or sent to custom feed lots for eventual sale
to a national processor. When marketed as fat cattle, most of the
Ironside cattle will qualify as CAB (Certified Angus Beef) and be
eligible for export under the age limitations established by the
major Asian countries.
The forestry
operations run in conjunction with the cattle. The Oregon forest of
about 8,000 acres has primarily Ponderosa Pine, Douglas and White
Fir and Larch varieties. All are soft woods. Management maintains a
careful program of forest oversight. All logging is done on a
selective basis with consideration given to maintaining the quality
of the forest for the future. This includes excluding many groves
and stands from harvest to assure that wildlife is protected and the
appearance maintained and improved. During the logging, non
productive and invasive species, such as juniper, are thinned and
cleared so that remaining stands can flourish and areas opened up to
improve native grasses for grazing.
In the fall
along with ranching and forestry programs, Ironside Associates and
its outfitting partner host selective bow and arrow as well as rifle
hunts for deer and elk, many of trophy size.
